Bernard Liu is a former drug henchman and also a witness in a government investigation into illegal narcotics on the island of Cebu in the Philippines.
After the recent murder of congressman, Ananias Dy, who was also a witness in the government investigation, Bernard Liu has been urged by authorities to give himself up for his own protection.
A theory into the killing of Dy holds that he was eliminated due to evidence he gave at the inquiry. If the theory is true then it brings into the spotlight the testimony of Liu which is regarded as equally shocking and therefore equally dangerous.
“My advice to Bernard Liu is to surrender to the NBI and place himself under their custody for his own safety,” said congressman, Antonio Cuenco who was the chairman of the congressional committee on illegal drugs in 2001 - the same time at which both Dy and Liu gave evidence.
The very odd thing about this all is that the evidence given in the investigation all pointed to two Chinese businessmen.
The authorities therefore know the likely source of the alleged threat against Liu.
Which in turn makes one wonder why, if the authorities already know from where the threat emanates, would Liu be any safer in police custody than he is on the run.
