It’s you they’re talking about. I’ll admit I’m guilty too, but then again who isn’t? Caffeine has even made the front cover of National geographic magazine, although I’ll admit I don’t have the faintest idea what caffeine and geography have in common. Just like everything else that stimulates any of the pleasure receptors in the human (and rodent) central nervous system there is an upside and a downside. The upside is that most of the substances that contain caffeine taste really good, coffee, tea and chocolate being the most popular, but now there is a vast array of soft drinks that contain it, sometimes in very large amounts.
There is a large consensus of folks that say this attraction to caffeine is merely a reflection of the types of lifestyles we live and a sign of the times we live in where everything is due yesterday and we attempt to squeeze every last second out of our days. I tend to fit into another grouping that has taken to fostering a caffeine habit. I tend to try and slack when I can but also have found the benefit of diet Red bull first thing in the morning to get rolling. I like a “Good” cup of coffee and love tea, but I digress, I LOVED to drink. Name it if it contained ETOH I drank it and if I really LOVED it I drank it all the time and in vast quantities, but alas I’ve found my way and reformed, but it seems that when I drink now I still want and seek some benefit and or effect no matter how benign or malignant. This caffeine addiction is everywhere and like every addiction folks will delude and deny they have this monkey. Far be it for me to cast stones mind you, I just get a kick out of calling Jane and John Doe addicts that’s all. Even though it’s common knowledge that amongst addicts nicotine, caffeine and alcohol are really popular replacements for other substances, what it tells me is we’re all in the same boat.
For me though the more things change the more they stay the same.
