Drug Sub Found in Spain

08.15.06 | Comment? | Published by Rob Wood

The BBC are reporting that a submarine found floating off the coast of Spain is suspected to have belonged to drug smugglers.

The 10 meter sub was found by members of the public abandoned and afloat off the northwest coast of Spain in the province of Galacia.

According to the BBC’s journalist, Galacia is one of the main entry points for drugs into Spain and Europe, leading to speculation that the odd discovery was a tool of drug traders.

If so, it would be the first verified report of drug traders using submarines to smuggle drugs (or attempting to) in Europe, though several instances of submarines being used in drug smuggling have occurred in Colombia.

It may also be slightly better news for drug enforcement in Europe than it would first appear. As in any conflict, necessity is the mother of invention. If drug smugglers in Europe are being forced into testing out new methods of delivery it will be mainly because older methods are decreasing in effectiveness.

The only question left now is who gets to play with the sub?
