Geography and Drugs and AIDS in China

Chinese Drug RaidAn extremely large proportion of China’s AIDS cases are in the provinces of Yunnan, Guangxi and Xinjiang.

Yunnan and Guangxi are in the southeast of the country and Xingjiang is in the far west.

At first glance, you may not think there was any correlation then between their AIDS statistics.

However if you then realise that southeast China borders Myanmar and Xinjiang shares a small border with Afghanistan, you realise that these three provinces of China abut the world’s two largest areas of heroin production.

Then you realise that the AIDS problems in the provinces are primarily driven by unsafe drug use and you begin to understand the potentially explosive health problem that China has on its hands.

According to “experts” mentioned in this article, the AIDS statistics for these provinces may also be under-reported by as much as 90% meaning that the health catstrophe may already have begun.

Not great times for the Chinese health system and certainly not for their drug addicts.
