If statistics are anything to go by (and often they are not) then it seems that there may be a growing problem with drug runners targetting women from Nigeria as drug mules to the UK.

Last year it was revealed that there had been a sixfold increase the the number of Nigerian women being charged with attempts to import drugs into the UK in the period three years prior. That is pretty significant.

It also came at the same time as an increase in the number of women from Trinidad and Tobago being caught for the same thing.

While foreign women make up less that 20% of the UK’s population of women prison inmates, of that 20% well over half are convicted of drugs related offenses.

Thye other interesting thing is that all of this comes a couple of years after an outcry concerning the number of women from Jamaica who were being caught for the same thing.

It would seem that the drug runners have taken their cue from the outcry and moved their recruiting to other greener pastures. Perhaps in that way they will be able to avoid the obvious difficulties associated with UK security profiling people of a particular description or from a particular country as being more likely to have drugs on them.
