http://www.dfid.gov.uk/images/countries/africa/map_ghana.gifAround the same time as six men appeared in court in Accra, Ghana, on charges of smuggling 30 kilograms of cocaine on a Ghana-registered ship, a three-member committee has been created by the Ministry of the Interior into the disappearance of five kilograms of the drugs seized.

The six crew men, three of them Ghanaian, two from China and one from South Korea, faced court earlier this week on charges of “importing narcotic drugs without a licence from the Ministry of Health, possessing narcotic drugs and engaging in criminal conspiracy”.

According to prosecutors, authorities had been tipped off in late April that a Ghana-registered fishing trawler called the Adad II was transporting drugs. In early May security agencies intercepted a ship bearing the same features but with a different name, the MV Benjamin, and found the bags of cocaine. Some time later five kilograms apparently went missing, with the suspects in that case being arrested by the Narcotics Control Board in conjunction with the Air Force and Navy.
