After initially claiming that he hadn’t taken drugs on Thursday night of last week and had just passed out after drinking wine, Rahul Mahajan has now confessed to police that he had in fact consumed drugs. The son of Pramod Mahajan, the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party’s general secretary until his death a month ago, he had collapsed at his Delhi home early the next day after having a late night dinner with Bibek Maitra, his late father’s aide. Maitra arrived at hospital dead on arrival.
Mahajan was released into police custody yesterday after being examined by hospital doctors. While police wanted to hold him for five days they only received two after a hearing at Patiala House Court soon after his release from hospital. Police told the court that he had admitted to using as well as giving others drugs. He has been charged with several drug offences, including possession and distribution of narcotics, and if convicted could face up to a maximum of 20 years in prison. Police say they plan on questioning him intensely in their allotted time.
Meanwhile the pouch of white powder found at his residence has been confirmed as heroin according to tests conducted by the Delhi Police’s Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory.
