A New Jersey policeman who went undercover in a gym to investigate illegal steroid use and ended up befriending wealthy members of a drug ring and using drugs with them, has been indicted, along with five other colleagues, on charges of tipping off the drug users about forthcoming police raids in exchange for receiving drugs like cocaine, anabolic steroids and the painkiller OxyContin.
Although the officers were arrested within the past 18 months the case was only made public on Tuesday with the indictments. According to Passaic County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jay McCann:
“[s]everal of the officers were engaging in some partying. It wasn’t really a drug distribution for profit. It was more of a social relationship between the officers and the targets. The targets lived a high-profile lifestyle: They drove luxury vehicles and they had boats, and they partied with the officers. Then it cascaded from there.”
It was when the policeman heard that their new friends were under investigation, including conversations between some of the crooked police and the men being captured on a wiretap, that they tipped them off about upcoming raids. They have now all been suspended and will face court in the next four to six weeks.
