In one of those tragic incidents that seem to abound in the world of drug users, two teens have been sentenced in Salt Lake City in the USA after they dumped the body of a friend who had overdosed on heroin.
The sentences seem reasonably lenient with Niles Boyce receiving 30 days detention, 125 hours of community service and a $2,250
fine and Austin Uncles receiving 14 days detention, 50 hours of community service and a $750 fine.
While the parents of the overdose victim, Zachary Martinez felt that the boys’ sentence were too lenient, the judge said he gave them the maximum that he was allowed to.
Martinez perished when he and four other teenagers went on a bender of alcohol, marijuana and heroin sniffing.
While some will see the boys as having received a lenient sentence, others might stop to think that it was a terrible situation to be faced with as a teenager. Had the boys felt they could approach authorities for aid, without the threat of getting into trouble, a lot of consternation could have been avoided and possibly even a life saved.
Each year, many people die of drug overdoses as their friends are too afraid to take them to receive professional medical aid in an OD situation.
