The Scourge of the Drug Accusation

08.24.06 | Comment? | Published by Rob Wood

A Major from the Israeli military has been demoted to private, given a 30 day jail term and been discharged from the IDF for possession of cocaine.

The catcher?

He tested negative for any trace of any drug in his system.

This makes it an interesting case. According to the story, he was caught in a car with a civilian to whom he had given money to purchase the drug. There was no word on who the drug was intended for, but with the negative test of the Major, we might be able to surmise that the civilian was the intended recipient.

Even so, the book was thrown at him (and the media sure as hell intimated from their headlines that he was rock solid into drugs.)

The case also highlights the massive negative stigma of a drug fellony as the Major was unwilling to face heavier charges and elected to take a plea bargain. It seems he did not want to risk the possiblity of a heavier felony being recorded against his name.

Considering the high rank of the individual, and the fact that he will effectively have to start his professional career from scratch, it is perhaps punishment enough. Add to that the inuendo of the media in reporting such cases and the guy’s reputation is looking in bad shape.

Anything for a good story though.
